Well proportioned columns and pilasters define openings and entrances. Used since the Egyptian times, columns provide extended openings to be supported providing uninterrupted light and passage way between rooms.

Used externally around a building and incorporating arches between the columns allows for the creation of a portico. Bolonga in Northern Italy boasts some 40km of porticoed walkways around the city.
